Simple Talk: Why I Love the Prophet

Why I Love the Prophet
by Marney Hilton Zambrano
(Taken from March 2010 Friend)

I love to see the prophet.
He always seems to be
So unafraid and happy,
A source of strength for me.
I love to hear the prophet
Reveal both truth and light.
The Holy Ghost bears witness
That what he says is right.

He shows me by example
The things I need to do
So I can make wise choices
And know the Church is true.
I know the prophet loves me.
He wants me to be good
So I can live the gospel
As Jesus says we should.

The truths the prophet teaches
Will help me to obey
My parents and my leaders,
Who guide me on my way.
I'll heed the prophets' counsel
And do my best to show,
In thought and word and action, I live by what I know.

Sharing Time: Prophets are Called by God

This is the sharing time that I did for the first week of the month: Used the idea found here but changed it up just a bit.

What you will need:

'Prophet' typed or written on a piece of paper, big enough for the children to see.

'Prophets are called by God.' typed or written on a piece of paper, big enough for children to see.

Cards with the commandments from the Primary Partners C.D. (have these listed below – you could easily find some clipart and make your own cards.)

**Post the 'Prophet' sign on the board.

Ask the children what the word says. Prophet.

What do you think of when you hear that word?

Perhaps you think of a prophet from Old Testament times, wearing a long robe. Or a Book of Mormon prophet holding the Liahona. Perhaps your prophet is old, like Moses. Or did you imagine a young boy prophet like Josiah? Maybe you thought of today’s prophet, who wears a suit and tie?

But it doesn’t matter what the prophets look like or how old they are, the most important thing is that the Prophets are called by God and they are called to be messengers for our Heavenly Father.

Underneath the word Prophet, post the sign ‘Prophets are called by God.’

What does that mean, Prophets are called by God?

So, who chooses the Prophets? Do we all vote? Does your Dad get to choose who he thinks should be the Prophet? NO! Prophets are called by God!

Why do we have prophets? (To give us commandments about what we need to do to return to our Heavenly Father again)

What are some of these commandments?

**Have the Jr. primary find the cards that are hidden in the room. Give the Sr. Primary the scriptures to read, then have them decide which card it matches. Cards include:

Keep the Sabbath Day holy – D&C 59:10

Respect your parents – Mosiah 13:20

Read and Study the Book of Mormon – Moroni 10:3

Be a friend to the friendless – Mormon 8:5

Be a Missionary – D&C 18:15-16

Strive to be worthy to attend the temple – Helaman 10:7

Have family home evening – Deuteronomy 11:19

Love One Another – John 13:34

Plant a Garden – Jeremiah 28:5

Pay your tithing – Genesis 28:22

Write in your journal each day – Abraham 1:31

Find friends that choose the right –Proverbs 22:24

Simple Primary Talk: I Will Follow the Prophet

I Will Follow the Prophet
by Louise Wellington

When my dad says,
"Let's go and play,"
We run down to the park.

When my mom says,
"It's time for bed."
I lie down in the dark.

When music says,
"You need to dance,"
I move my hands and feet.

When tummy says,
"I need a snack,"
I get something to eat.

When the prophet says,
"We all must pray,"
I humbly bow my head.

His voice is one
That speaks for God,
So I'll do as he's said.

Sharing Time on: The Prophet teaches me what I must do to live with God again.

If you knew that Jesus Christ was coming to speak to you, would you take time from your computer games and friends to listen to Him? Twice a year, the prophet and other General Authorities speak to us in special meetings called general conference. They tell us the things the Savior would tell us if He were here. Their words are like the scriptures and will guide us in our lives.

In the Book of Mormon, we read about a king who was also a prophet. His name was Benjamin. When King Benjamin was getting very old, he wanted to teach his people about the Savior one more time before he died. He had a tall tower built near the temple, and he climbed upon the tower to speak so that he could be heard by all the people.

The people came with their families to hear him. They pitched their tents around the temple and were ready when King Benjamin spoke to them. However, there were so many people that they still couldn’t all hear him. So he had his words written down and given to them.
He taught them the things the Savior wanted them to do. He testified to them that the Savior, Jesus Christ, would come to them.

The people listened to their prophet. When he finished speaking to them, they wanted to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ and to keep His commandments. They made a covenant to always remember Jesus, and they taught their children the words of King Benjamin. The people became very righteous as they did what the Lord, through their prophet, asked them to do.

Just recently, President Thomas S. Monson, addressed us for the first time as prophet. Like King Benjamin, he speaks to us for the Savior. He tells us the things we should do to live our lives the way the Savior wants us to. He doesn’t need a high tower to speak to us today. He speaks to us from the new Conference Center in Salt Lake City.

Our prophet loves us just as the Savior loves us. If we do the things he teaches, we can be happier in this life. We can learn how to live again with Father in Heaven and the Savior, Jesus Christ. It is wonderful to know that through our prophet, the Savior is speaking to each of us!

SONG: "I am a child of God". Instruct the children before singing, to remember the last line of the song. After the song is over ask if anyone remembers the last line of the song. "Teach me all that I must do, to live with Him some day." What do you think we must "do" to return to live with Him? Discuss.

ACTIVITY: Hide the cards around the room, and have children take turns finding a card, then discuss what each card means. (The cards mentioned are found on one of the Primary Partners Sharing Time Treasures C.D's)

SUMMARY: Share your testimony with the children that President Monson WILL show us the way. He will lead us, guide us and teach us of all that we must do to live with Heavenly Father once more.
