Simple Primary Talk: Prayer

Pray every day.

Think hard of what to say.

We fold our arms, we bow our heads,

We stay reverent when the prayer is said.

We thank Heavenly Father for the blessings He's brought.

We ask Him to help us do the things He has taught.

And then end our prayer with an amen,

So we can go on, happy again.

I kneel right down to say my prayer

And offer up my every care.

But first I thank for all I hold

And do not stop till each is told:

My eyes, my hands, my walking feet;

The friends I always love to greet;

My home and loving family;

Each of my blessings plain to see!

And then I pray for what I need:

For intellect to help me read;

For kind, sweet words among my friends;

For proper health and rain God sends.

I kneel right down to say my prayer

And realize that God is there.

He listens to my every word,

And this I know: my prayer is heard!

Sharing Time on: Prayer

DISCUSSION: Have you ever seen a train? Have you had the opportunity to ride in a train? How do trains move? How would you describe a train? Most trains require a boarding pass and you can't get on without one. Let them know that they don't need a boarding pass today, everyone is invited to go on a ride on the Prayer Train.

ACTIVITY: Choose four children to help you with this activity. Make a small train track from masking tape and for the children to stand on. The children represent a train. Give each of the children a part of prayer train (parts of train can be found here); however, do not give it to them in order. Give the first child the train, "We thank thee...", the second child, "In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen", etc. See if anyone can help you put this train in the right order. As each child is asked to stand in their correct place, review the importance of the order of prayer. Ask the children if they would ever go to their mom and start out a conversation by saying, "Because I want to mom!" What would your mother say? Probably, "What do you want?" When we speak to our parents, we show respect; however, we show an even greater level of respect by following the steps of prayer.

LESSON: Put the assembled train on the board, then under the train car titled: “We thank thee..” make a list of the things that the children can remember in the prayers. Then under the train car titled: “We ask thee…” make a list of the things that we can ask for when we pray. Remind children that as we pray our arms should be folded, eyes closed, and head bowed so we can show reverence to our Heavenly Father.

CRAFT: After discussing prayer, then have each child color and make their own prayer train. Take a piece of white paper or construction paper and cut in half length wise. Cut a long piece of yarn and have the children glue the train on top of the yarn to connect each cart in the correct order. You could also have them make the train into a necklace. Staple or tape each part of the train onto a piece of yarn.

CONCLUSION: Bear testimony of the importance of prayer and that we show respect to Heavenly Father when we use the correct order of prayer. Prayer is like the train tracks...it helps get us on track to getting to know our Father in Heaven and having faith in Him.

Show a picture of Jesus Christ visiting the Nephites and commanding them to pray. Read the story together (see 3 Ne. 18:17–21).
On the chalkboard write Family prayer strengthens my family. Write scripture references about prayer (see below) on pieces of paper, and tie each paper to a stick or twig. Have each class read a scripture and discuss the blessings of prayer.

· 3 Ne. 18:15;
· 3 Ne. 18:20;
· 3 Ne. 18:21;
· Moro. 10:4–5;
· D&C 68:28;
· D&C 88:63;
· D&C 112:10

To report, have each class read the scripture, tell the blessing from the scripture, and add the stick to the others. Once all of the sticks have been collected, tie them together in a bundle.
Ask a child to try to bend the bundle of sticks. When the sticks are bundled together, they become stronger.
Similarly, the blessings of prayer can strengthen our families.
