FHE Lesson: The Greatest Treasure

So, last night for Family Home Evening we did this lesson/activity and my son loved it. 

Start out the lesson by singing "I am a Child of God", then talk about how we lived with Heavenly Father before we were born, and that our goal is to be able to live with him again someday.  Then, have a treasure hunt to find a treasure bag filled with treats. (We just had a Hershey's candybar that the kids both shared.)  Clues are written on the backs of "obedience reminder cards" to remind the children to be obedient and follow Jesus.  (The cards were printed from one of the Sharing Time Treasures C.D's, but it wouldn't be very hard to make your own using clipart) The cards and clues on the back of each card are:

Read the children Clue 1- Roses are red, Violets are blue, To find clue 2, Look in a shoe.

*Keep the Commandments - on the back is Clue 2: Wasn't that fun? Are you ready for more? To find clue 3, Look behind a door.

*Love one Another - Clue 3: Move right along, As quick as a wink, And find clue 4, Hidden near a sink.
*Pray -Clue 4: Getting tired? Don't despair. Go find clue 5, Beneath a chair.
 
*Tell the truth - Clue 5: You're doing great, Playing this game. Go find clue 6, by a picture frame.

*Come home on time - Clue 6: You're almost through, with your inspection. Go find a clue, by your reflection. (Mirror)

*Do your chores - Clue 7: To find the next clue, All you have to do, is look in a place that's under your head, and can be found on your nice, cozy bed. (Pillow)

*Say "Quickly I'll Obey" - Clue 8: You are unstoppable and can't be beat. The last clue can be found in something that goes beep, and while the time it does keep, It's main function involves heat. (Microwave)

*Finish homework - Clue 9: The game is finished, So go ahead, You'll find the treasure, Beneath a bed.

Then, they will find the treat bag or treat hidden along with a card with a picture of a treasure chest on it with the saying: If I obey and follow the Savior, I can live with Heavenly Father. This, to me, is the greatest treasure!! (This card was also printed from the the Sharing Time C.D., but again you could make you own!!) Then, discuss with the children each of the cards that they found and how following those commandments can help us be able to return to live with our Heavenly Father someday. 

**Like I said, my son loved it, so I will have to try to find some more lessons that I can use to do a treasure hunt with. It really kept his attention and my 3 yr. old daughter's too.**
